you sort of get specific. but i thought this was just a broad, bold defense of liberal ideas. when i was listening to the speech, those points stuck out to me. it was the first time i had ever heard gay rights mentioned in an inaugural. it was a bold defense of social security and medicare, the sort of new deal, fdr sort of vision of the democratic state. it was i thought for liberals, for progressives, they had to have seen this as finally, a complete and total embrace by this president of progressivism. >> certainly a vindication for all the work they have done to see this barack obama show up and deliver that address. the "new yorker" says if it is followed by action it will be counted among the most important american political addresses of the modern era. ben, i want to ask you. they have highly touted the fact that the lily ledbetter act was the first piece of legislation the president signed. words into action. what are the first 100 days going to look like? >> well, i think he's going to aggressively pursue all these fronts. obviously we have big fiscal challenges. he is goin

obama got an important buy-in you might say for his defense secretary nominee, chuck hagel, from the powerful new york senator chuck schumer. this morning schumer released a statement that reads in part, based on several key assurances provided by senator hagel, i am currently prepared to vote for his confirmation. i encourage my senate colleagues who have shared my previous concerns to also support him. well, this coupled with senator barbara boxer's vote of support yesterday has made his path for conformation look a lot easier. joining me is "the huffington post's" sam stein and "time" magazine's michael crowley. i thought schumer would take more time. got it on the record, maybe got a little more pro-hawkish than he was to start with the interview, but he got what he needed. i was impressed at the speed with which this is being done. your thoughts? >> i'm sort of with you on the one hand. it looked like schumer had legitimate concerns about what hagel's positions were with respect to iran and israel. then again, i thought about what was behind the act? in the end it was a demo

to being secretary of defense. they are very close and i don't know that obama had a deep relationship with him, but there other ways in which his fingerprints are on the president's policies and afghanistan won the argument. two things here i would add on guns specifically. biden in a way is -- a messenger for obama and sectors that may not trust him. he's got working class roots from industrial pennsylvania. he's catholic. i guess that the white house sees him as a messenger to people who might be skeptical and have ideas of what obama's agenda is and that biden could be a better messenger on this. i hate to bring up the 2016 number, but i think you may see more opportunities for biden to step out and prove himself in his own standing if he wants to run for president. >> the one thing i would add is nobody understands personal tragedy and is able to speak to that in an emotional compelling way as joe biden. going back to what you were saying about very little hope of this package or really much of anything, passing it is republican house. what do you think the white house strategy is

the defense industry, which is not to say that there aren't plenty of democrats whose bread is not being buttered by defense contractors, but if you look down at the breakdown of sequester cuts, defense gets hit with $55 billion in cuts, but they are much more severe, and as dave wood from the huffington post has said, it's like taking a meat clever to the defense industry. the nondefense cuts, 55 billion, same amount, but social security, retirement, veterans medicaid, snap, food stamps and jobless benefits are all exempt, steve. >> i think there's a sort of story here now that's been two years in the making where at some point this is going to have to come to a head. at some point president obama is going to have to call the bluff of the republicans. there were battles over continuing resolutions to fund the government in 2011. there was a summer of 2011 with the debt ceiling. there was the super committee. they were setting up the fiscal cliff. now we've got continuing resolution in march. now we've got the sequester, march 1st. now we've got debt ceiling all over again. one of these

it was a progressive vision for the country. at the same time with the exception of his defense of the social safety net, which is to say medicaid and social security, climate change used to be a bipartisan issue. immigration reform used to be a bipartisan issue. even gay rights is something where you have conservatives that support marriage equality. in the end substantively is it that much of a dramatic shift? >> with the exception of gay rights, there is very little that is significant in the obama agenda that could not have been proposed and was not proposed by moderate republicans in the late 1990s and early 2000's. newt gingrich sat on the couch. the health care plan is based off the 1993 bob dole and lincoln chafy health care plan, and you can go on and on down the list like that. that's what i thought was interesting to e.j.'s point. this was not really a speech about what obama wants to get done next. it was about making a philosophical case for what obama and america has already done. somewhat what i think is unusual is an enormous amount of it and -- >> already one day in. >> already unus

big defense cuts. lindsey graham's even saying, it's better than nothing. what do you say? do you think sequestration has to be avoided at all cost, or could it go into effect, forcing some sort of spending cuts and fiscal discipline? >> well, i think we can and we should continue to both reduce expenditures and add revenues in a balanced approach to debt reduction that should take several years. it took several years from 2000, where we had a surplus under president clinton to get to a deficit under president bush. so it will take some time. but i think sequestration is a blunt instrument. it doesn't allow the cabinet secretaries, not just the secretary of defense, but the secretary of every other agency, to make judicious judgments about which programs are higher priority. and we in the congress should be able to make those judgments ourselves, working with the administration. so i don't think it's the right instrument. i think the goal is appropriate, which is to reduce the deficit, do it in a balanced way, and recognize that there are some things that you can do up-front, quic

of youth juvenile justice organizations. it seems to eliminate what the children's defense fund calls the cradle to prison pipeline and replace it with a cradle to college and career pipeline by investing in children. every time you do that using evidence-based approaches, you significantly reduce crime and save more money than you spend. the fact of the matter is, my friend at the university of virginia frequently mentions. if your school shooting prevention program begins when the shooter is at the door, it's too late. now, you have to reduce violence generally, you have to talk about the mental health. and if you've got a troubled child that's trying to mass an arsenal of weapons to shoot somebody, you've got to intervene before they show up at the door. i mean, there's a lot that we can do that can protect our children. and we shouldn't be focused on just one. i support the assault weapons ban. i don't think -- i supported it when it came in 20 years ago. i opposed the expiration that should have been continued. that's just one, the magazines, mental health, and prevention. >> con
